When is it time to redress or replace your diamond wheel and polish wheels

Regular maintenance can improve edge finish and help prevent future problems with your machine.

When Does a Diamond Wheel Need Professional Re-Dressing?

Over time, diamond wheels can become glazed, uneven, or lose their cutting efficiency. When you notice reduced performance, excessive heat buildup, poor surface finish, or vibration during grinding, it’s a strong indication that your wheel requires a professional re-dress. Proper re-dressing restores the wheel’s cutting ability, accuracy, and extends its service life.

We offer a professional diamond wheel re-dressing service to ensure optimal performance and consistency. Please contact us below for pricing and additional information.

A good indication that a wheel needs dressing is an increase of 3 amperes or more in motor current draw, jumping of the ammeter, or fluctuation in the ammeter reading. When any of these conditions occurs, the groove in the wheel must be dressed.

When a Diamond Wheel Becomes “Unshaped

Over time, as a diamond grinding wheel is used, several things can happen to its profile (shape) and performance:

1. Loss of Profile Shape
A new or properly dressed diamond wheel has a specific shape (like a radius or concave form) that matches the edge design you’re grinding. With use, that profile can wear down—flattening the intended radius or contour. This means the wheel no longer produces the correct shape on your glass edges and just grinds flat rather than shaping accurately.

2. Worn or Broken Diamond Grits
Diamond grits on the surface can fracture, wear down, or pull out of the wheel matrix. When that happens, cutting efficiency drops, and the wheel starts skating or rubbing instead of grinding, making edges inconsistent or rough.

3. Glazing & Clogging from Glass Powder
Glass powder and debris can build up in the bond between diamond particles, especially without clean water cooling. This “clogs” the wheel, making it less sharp and less able to cut glass cleanly.

4. Poor Finish or Increased Grinding Time
If you notice you have to press harder, take longer to shape edges, or the finish on the glass is rougher/chipped, that’s a sign the wheel is no longer cutting effectively and may need dressing or replacement.

Regular Machine Maintenance for Glass Edging Machines

Regular maintenance of glass edging machines is essential to ensure consistent edge quality, extend tool life, and prevent costly machine damage or downtime. A well-maintained machine operates more efficiently, produces better finishes, and protects critical components from premature wear.

1. Daily Cleaning
Glass edging generates fine glass powder and sludge that can build up on spindles, motors, guide rails, and inside the machine. Daily cleaning prevents abrasive debris from damaging bearings, seals, and moving parts.

2. Water & Coolant System Checks
Proper water flow is critical for cooling diamond wheels and flushing away glass particles. Blocked nozzles, dirty filters, or poor water pressure can cause overheating, wheel glazing, and excessive wear on both tools and machine components.

3. Diamond Wheel Inspection
Regularly inspect diamond wheels for wear, glazing, or loss of profile. Worn or unshaped wheels increase grinding pressure, strain motors, and can damage spindles and glass edges. Dressing wheels when needed helps maintain cutting efficiency and accuracy.

4. Belt, Chain & Drive System Maintenance
Check belts, chains, and conveyors for proper tension, alignment, and wear. Loose or worn drive components can cause vibration, inconsistent feed speeds, and excessive stress on motors and gearboxes.

5. Lubrication of Moving Parts
Ensure all guide rails, bearings, and mechanical slides are properly lubricated according to the manufacturer’s schedule. Lack of lubrication leads to friction, heat buildup, and accelerated component failure.

6. Alignment & Calibration
Regularly verify spindle alignment, pressure settings, and machine calibration. Misalignment can result in uneven edgework, excessive wheel wear, and long-term machine damage.
